Grantee Profile: Poetry Slam, Inc.
Founded in 1997, Poetry Slam Inc., promotes the performance and creation of poetry while cultivating literary activities and spoken word events. As a member-based organization, they oversee the production of the National Poetry Slam, the Individual World Poetry Slam and the Women of the World Poetry Slam. The organization also provides a platform for artists’ voices to be heard beyond social, cultural, political and economic barriers.
What is poetry slam? It’s the competitive art of performance poetry. Slams put a dual emphasis on writing and performance with diverse topics. Today, Poetry Slam Inc., has more than 500 members and has oversight of more than 100 certified slams in North America.
Bonfils-Stanton Foundation is helping by granting funds for the National Poetry Slam in Denver set for August 2017. This is the largest spoken word poetry event of its kind in the western hemisphere and draws artists from around the United States and Canada. In addition to the competition, National Poetry Slam will also offer various free arts and cultural programming throughout Denver.
