Project Description

Grantee Profile: Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still Museum

The Clyfford Still Museum opened to the public in 2011 after the city of Denver was selected to receive the artist’s substantial collection. Clyfford Still was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists, and is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. The Clyfford Still Museum was established to promote understanding and appreciation of the late artist’s work.

The collection represents nearly 95 percent of the artist’s total creative output, making it one of the most comprehensive single-artist collections in the world. Holdings include approximately 3,200 works created by Clyfford Still from 1920 to 1980, as well as significant archives that offer an in-depth look at the artist and his practice.

The Clyfford Still Museum recently celebrated its 5th anniversary year in Denver with a series of major exhibitions that continued to bring national and international attention to the artist, the Museum, and the city.

In addition to presenting rotating exhibitions, Clyfford Still Museum offers innovative school, family and youth programs. Engaging cross-discipline programs are presented in collaboration with Arts Students League, RedLine, Swallow Hill Music, Friends of Chamber Music and others.

Bonfils-Stanton Foundation supports activities related to the establishment of the Museum.
