Stephanie Villafuerte was appointed Child Protection Ombudsman for the state of Colorado in November, 2015. Prior to this appointment she served as Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center. She has practiced law for 23 years and dedicated her practice on improving the plight of Colorado’s abused and neglected children. Stephanie served for 12 years as a state and federal prosecutor specializing in child maltreatment cases. She was deputy chief of staff to Governor Bill Ritter, where she served as policy advisor on child welfare and juvenile justice issues. She lectures statewide and nationally on child maltreatment issues and has received several awards for her contributions to the field including “Prosecutor of the Year” by the Colorado District Attorney’s Council, “Outstanding Lawyer of the Year” by the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association and “Women Who Raise the Bar for Children Award,” by the Colorado Women’s Bar Association.
